Stokebird
Lucas Pawlowski and I kept talking about a winter gathering for riders. I launched Stokebird, and Anna and I have done most of the organizing since.

Riding a Onewheel brought me a group of friends and a steady supply of practical problems: flat tires, scarce parts, boards that needed service close to home, and friends up north who needed a reason to come to Miami in winter.
One wheel. A whole community.
Nearly everything here started with somebody I knew: Chris and Lucas at the shop late at night, Ryan with his daughter's board and a bad bearing, Anna keeping sponsors in the loop before Stokebird.

Draggin Tail started while I was testing metal protection plates. I designed it, Southern Manufacturing made the metal parts, and I finished each one by hand.

A warm response at Float Life Fest 2 turned into years of race photographs, group rides and full albums shared with the community.

Helium-neon tubes as a kid, salvaged laser diodes later, then cameras, festival light shows and a little professional experience with thermal imaging.
Follow the experiments
Chris Richardson and Lucas Pawlowski turn up in a lot of these stories because we were already riding and making things together. In December 2018 we were at Miami's old RC Cola plant with our boards under the murals. The late-night tests and shop work grew out of friendships like that one.
Riding made the gaps easy to see. A part was hard to buy. A board needed service nearby. An event produced thousands of photographs that riders wanted to find. Each gap called for a different kind of help, and sometimes the right help was backing someone else to do the work.
Stokebird began as an invitation: come to Miami while it's cold everywhere else. Anna, family, friends, sponsors and volunteers turned that invitation into something people come back to.
Metal plates, a spark tail, a tire gel, prototype testing for Land-Surf, a parts business, a local shop, event photographs and an album of songs.
No riding project matches that search.

The Voice of Onewheel
April 2019, The Voice of Onewheel: announcing the Flight Guards collaboration with Flight Fins.
Watch the recordingAn April 2019 Voice of Onewheel episode, introduced by the publisher around an announcement with Flight Fins. The subject is Flight Guards, the protection plates I worked on with Flight Fins.
It comes from the period when Armor-Dilloz was growing out of the sealant work and the plates were their own line of development. For how the plates were designed and made, and what Southern Manufacturing did, see the protection-plates story.

The Voice of Onewheel
October 2019: I joined Ryan Hurewitz's episode to explain how to find the Float Life Fest 3 photographs and video.
Watch the recordingRyan Hurewitz is the headline guest here, in an episode called How to Part Out Your Board. The parts work is his subject. I join to tell people how to get to the Float Life Fest 3 photo and video collection, which is easy to miss if you only read the title.
The two stories connect. I supplied the idea and seed funding for what became Witz Wheel, and Ryan built and ran it. By this point the festival photographs had also become a real commitment for me, and a community show was a natural place to say where to find them.

Riders were starting to get their own around this time. The product story here covers the breakaway design, the metal cut and welded by Southern Manufacturing, and the final manufacturing I did by hand.

No Limits To Ride
A long 2021 No Limits To Ride conversation that starts with riding and wanders into lasers and geology.
Watch the recordingNearly three hours with No Limits To Ride. Riding is the starting point, and the publisher's introduction also lists lasers, geology and the circular feature on the seafloor off Miami.
The impact idea remains my hypothesis. A 2020 field study by Paris, Robertson and Schwartz concluded that the feature is a solutional doline. The Miami structure story includes both accounts and their sources.
Riding led to Armor-Dilloz and gave me years of things to photograph. Both go further than the board.
